Norwegian Fun Facts: The Continuum

Did YOU know?...

* There is a contingent of local folks, mostly ladies, who are obsessed with fake tanning. You can recognize them a mile away from their orange sheen. The tanning/sun salons are open 365 days a year and often 24 hours! How is this possible? Two words: COIN OP!

* Graffiti = minimal in this town and harshly punitive if caught in the act. They try and dissuade this rarified street art with PSAs in the cinema that has an animation warning that if arrested for graffiti, the offender will NOT be able to go to the United States for 6 years! Impetus Culturus? Deterrents take on a whole new angle here in Norway.

*Diagonal Death Wish- The crosswalks here are plentiful and traffic READILY yields to any pedestrian. If you even gesture like you are going to step off the curb, cars screech to a halt. It's a little unnerving. Crosswalk buttons also favor the two legged traveller, with some intersections stopping both flows of traffic at once, albeit briefly, which causes the phenomenon of people scurrying diagonally across the middle in ant like formation. I tried to picture the profane wonderland that would erupt from such sights in New York City...
